The Books So Far

As you should know by now, I am a big, big reader. I love reading and books and all things literacy! I'm trying to read 50 books this year and I thought I would give you a little review on the ones that I've managed to read cover to cover so far.

year: 2005 | pages: 432 | rating: 4/5
I read this book towards the beginning of the year and it was absolutely brilliant. You follow the true story of a drug and alcohol addict who goes in to rehab. You get to know his character as the narrative unfolds, as well as other people who help him in his journey. I loved the way this was written, it was very different to the usual writing style of most authors. I was captivated by this man's story and how he evolved, I also loved finding out what happened to the others at the end of the book.

Philomena by Martin Sixsmith
year: 2013 | pages: 458 | rating: 5/5
Yep, this one has a BIG old rating! Another true story and one that I absolutely fell in love with. Martin Sixsmith's career goes down hill and he is approached by Philomena's daughter to write a person of interest story. He unravels the story of Philomena's past and her son's future; it starts in Ireland where Philomena was in a convent and had to give her son away, the journey is Martin's quest to discover what happened to her son up to the present day. The book made me cry and so did the film, I would probably read the book again.

The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton
year: 2014 | pages: 416 | rating: 4/5
I didn't think I was going to be in love with this book, but I completely am! Set in the 17th century in an Amsterdam city, following a family who have more secrets than one household should have! The protagonist, Nella, has just married Johanne's and begins a new life. The narrative has some great reveals and the story just goes in directions that you wouldn't even think it! I really loved it and wanted there to be more when it ended - always a good sign.
