This Summer, Rupert heads to America for three months to longboard from LA to NYC. I decided that I didn't want to be nothing and just sit around waiting for him to come back and first came up with the idea of going on a really long yoga retreat, but they're super expensive. I almost gave up as I couldn't think of anything to do, then I decided that I'd like to volunteer somewhere. I didn't like the idea of not doing anything productive during this time, so volunteering seems like the perfect thing to do. As I was researching and looking places up, I started to fill in the application forms. For some reason, I didn't send them off straight away. I convinced myself that I couldn't send it off without Rupert going over them and checking if they were acceptable, but I think the real reason was because I was scared about being on my own in a foreign country for so long, without the usual pleasures that I take for granted on a daily basis. I realised that if I really wanted to make this happen and actually do this over the Summer then these applications needed to be sent off, otherwise I actually would be sitting at home, waiting for Rupert to come back. Well, on Wednesday last week, I sent off six different volunteering applications and so far two out of the six have accepted me! One of them is in Costa Rica working with animals and the other is in Northern Thailand working with and looking after children, I'm going to wait till I hear back from all of them to make a decision, but I'm so excited, it's going to be a real life lesson and experience. This is where J.K.Rowling comes in, she was totally right that "Anything's possible if you've got enough nerve", if I hadn't gotten the nerve to send off those applications I wouldn't have the possibility to go abroad and volunteer. If you want something to happen, make it happen, grab the courage and nerve and make your wants ticked off your list.

  1. Congratulations! I'll bet you'll love whichever you choose. This reminds me of the quote from the Cinderella Story; "Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game."

  7. Go for it, maybe don't go on your own if you're nervous about it, but go with a friend and you don't have to go for as long as i am! Just do it! <3.
